This AI Book-Writing Site Made $160K. Four Months In, It Was for Sale.
An AI site that takes people from book idea to published book has brought in more than $160,000 through its payment account. The revenue is real. Yet less than four months after it was founded, it was listed for sale.
The numbers are real, but it's a mediocre business: low ceiling, fast decline. A revenue screenshot tells you what a business has made, not what it's worth.

What it is
AIWriteBook takes someone with a book idea all the way to a published book: outline, chapters, cover, audiobook, even the files needed to list it on Amazon Kindle.
Label: an AI tool, sold to individual authors, paid for with lifetime deals and credits, finding customers through marketplaces, with costs that grow with usage.
Why it's falling
One: the revenue doesn't compound. A lifetime deal collects all future revenue up front.
Two: the substitute is right there. The latest general models can write around 70,000 words in one response, longer than a 50,000-word book.
Three, the killer: cost. Text is cheap, but audiobook voice is priced per character, about $12–$24 a book. The cheapest lifetime deal is $79, roughly $55 after the marketplace cut, collected once. Two audiobooks a year and the compute bill exceeds what the company received. The more a customer loves the product, the more it loses.
What it got right
The team were their own users: by their own account they had published 130+ books on their platform NanoReads and watched authors juggle five or six tools.
Free tools as a funnel: title and plot generators with no sign-up; seven free chapters after sign-up.
AppSumo for fast cash, at the price of borrowing from the future.
Is it right for you?
Suits people who can code, ship fast, absorb compute costs and compete on price with general-purpose AI.
Doesn't suit people who make their living from industry experience and relationships, or who need a quick payback. Copying it as-is: not recommended.
A better play
The demand is real and well paid. Per Reedsy's 2026 data, ghostwriting a business book in the US costs $30,000–$48,000. The tool sells for $79; the service sells for tens of thousands.
So turn the tool into a service: help senior professionals turn decades of experience into a book. People run interviews, structure and judgment; AI drafts.
Watch the trap: Scribe Media, which published 2,000+ books, laid off about 90 people in May 2023 while many authors had paid in full. Bill in stages, as the industry does.
Three questions to ask about businesses like this
- Is the revenue verified?
- When customers use it more, do costs go up?
- Is the money collected once, or every month?
FAQ
Is AIWriteBook's $160K revenue real?
Yes. About $162,000 in total and about $6,700 in the last 30 days, both read directly from its payment data by TrustMRR via RevenueCat. The often-quoted $40,000 best month is a third-party estimate and is not verified.
Why list a product that made $160K for sale after four months?
Three reasons: lifetime deals stop revenue from compounding; general AI models can now write a whole book in one response; and per-character audiobook costs mean heavy users can cost more than they paid.
Is an AI book-writing tool still worth building?
Not as-is. The money is in services: ghostwriting a business book in the US costs $30,000–$48,000. A human-led, AI-drafted ghostwriting service billed in stages is the more viable play.
